This herb blend is an amazing addition to any kitchen – no matter what your expertise level may be. Add this to your already impressive collection or use it as the starting point for your seasonings collection. Either way, you’ll be happy to have this staple in your cabinets.

What is Herbs de Provence?

Herbs de Provence is a very common household seasoning that is a blend of dried herbs that come from the Provence region of southeastern France – hence the name Herbs De Provence. This seasoning can be widely used in all types of recipes or top off your favorite dish for some extra herb-flavor.

Herbs De Provence typically contains the following herbs (not all blends contain all of these herbs):

  • Thyme
  • Basil
  • Rosemary
  • Tarragon
  • Savory
  • Marjoram
  • Oregano
  • Bay leafs

Herbs De Provence has all your herb staples compiled into one seasoning – making it super convenient. The thing we love most about this seasoning is that we don’t have to create our own seasoning mixture because it’s already all blended together. We love to cook with your typical dried herbs, but having to buy them and use them all separately can be a pain and it can be pricey. By purchasing Herbs De Provence, you can get all your favorite herbs in one, convenient jar.

There are so many different options you can purchase when it comes to Herbs De Provence. We’ve tested out so many different brands and types but these two have quickly become our favorites: Simply Organic Herbs De Provence, and Morton & Bassett Herbs De Provence with Lavender.

The Simply Organic Herbs De Provence is a great option if you are just getting into using this seasoning. This is a traditional French blend of dried herbs that contains savory, thyme, rosemary, basil, tarragon, and lavender. This seasoning is certified organic, non-irradiated, kosher, and non-ETO.

The Morton & Bassett Herbs De Provence seasoning has a unique blend of herbs and spices to add so much flavor to anything you add it to. You can add it to any marinades or vinaigrettes, sprinkle it on tomatoes, add it to your favorite salad, or dry rub on chicken. This specific blend contains chervil, basil, rosemary, tarragon, garlic, lavender, marjoram, savory, thyme, and parsley.

History of Herbs De Provence

The history of Herbs De Provence is rather interesting. This herb blend started in the southeastern Provence region of France. The name of this blend originally described a mixture of herbs that were grown in the Provencal region in the summer months, which later turned into the household seasoning, Herbs De Provence. While this blend of herbs was always a staple since its conception, it became very popular throughout the world during the 1960s when Julia Child, a famous chef, included the seasoning in her famous Poulet Sauté recipe. Julia Child was given proper credit for making the seasoning what it is today – world famous. Then the 1970s came around and Ducos, a French brand, started to package the herb blend and selling it to customers all over the world.

How to cook with Herbs De Provence

Herbs De Provence is a very popular spice when it comes to cooking things like chicken, lamb, fish, vegetables, and so much more. If you want to intensify any of your dishes, throw a little Herbs De Provence. This herb blend seasoning smells amazing when being used, and it can add a serious amount of flavor to any of your dishes. Here are some of the ways we cook with Herbs De Provence.

Season meat or fish

This is the most common way this seasoning blend is used. You can season and marinate any meat or fish of your choice. Add some olive oil, some salt, pepper, and then top it all off with your Herbs De Provence! Let it soak in for 1-2 hours for maximum flavor, bake for however long you need to, and enjoy.

Add to liquids

Herbs De Provence is a great seasoning to use as a burst of flavor. If you make your own salad dressing, vinaigrette, or marinade sauce, Herbs de Provence can be used to add a little extra kick and uniqueness to your blend.

Sprinkle onto your dish

One of our favorite ways to cook with Herbs De Provence is to sprinkle it over any dish we make. When we make a Caprese salad, we always top it off with our Herbs de Provence.

Top of your salad

Herbs De Provence makes for a great salad topper seasoning. Add in whatever you want to your salad, add your dressing, and top it off with some dried herbs. It adds so much flavor and takes an ordinary salad to the next level.
